Finding Peace in Running: Lessons from a Marathon

It’s hard to believe there’s less than a week left until my final marathon in Brighton (well, that’s what I keep telling myself)! Since my training began in the last quarter of 2024, it’s given me a strong focus during a time of major life changes that affect not only me, but my whole family. Getting out to train, while balancing life with two young kids, has certainly been a challenge. Most of my sessions were completed early in the mornings at the gym with incline workouts and balanced routines. But despite the challenges, running has become my safe space—my time to clear my head and sort through my thoughts.
In the final week leading up to the marathon, I’m managing my day job, working with clients, and generating new business, all while taking full advantage of the good weather by spending time in the garden and other outdoor spots. The flexibility to manage my time and focus on what truly matters with my family has helped me reduce stress and avoid frustration. The marathon isn’t just about the race—it’s about spending quality time with my wife and children. We’re turning it into a full weekend in Brighton to make lasting memories. It’s also a chance to show my children that seeking new challenges and testing yourself, even for the last time, is something to be proud of.
This post isn’t just a personal update on my training for what I hope is my last marathon—it’s also a reflection on how this journey has improved my ability to balance my work and home life as a self-employed consultant. The fact that I feel less stressed and that my family has noticed I’m more relaxed is an important part of this entire process and transformation in my life.
Of all the challenges I’ve faced in life, this one stands out as one of the best. It’s allowed me to spend more quality time with my wife and children. And knowing that they’ve seen positive changes in me, especially in how I engage with them and don’t miss out on the little moments that help them grow, means the world. There are so many moments now when my wife says, “You know what happens when I sit on the floor?” and both of our boys immediately jump on me to play. I love seeing them so happy and smiling. It’s also about spending meaningful time with my wife—without her support during this change, none of this would have been possible.
Life is about enjoying the moments and spending time with the people who truly make you happy. Appreciate what you have right now, because you don’t have to wait for the perfect moment to start living.
